Some deep ecologists say that it would be all for the best if the industrial world were just to collapse, despite all the human suffering that would entail. Moreover, sometimes the needs of a “whole” clash with the interests of the individuals that comprise it. Survival should then come next in importance, since obviously there can be no social justice without survival of the human species. it should be noted that exponents of ecological theology are not necessarily bound to accept the traditional, conservative, organic, hierarchical model for society.

Many of us feel that it is possible to do wrong to animals, whether that be by shooting innocent bears or by torturing cats. At some point, the contrast between the ‘target’ and the background, or other targets, reaches a limit set by the signal-to-noise ratio of the photoreceptors that contain a particular visual pigment. Nature study practices and scholarship continued through the turn of the last century into the war years.

If the local occurrence of principal resources varied each year, as it did among the Shoshoni Indians of Nevada, a multifamily society of permanent composition was not possible. The extinction of the European aurochs as late as 1627 would seem to have been a simple case of overenthusiastic hunting. Since believing in a balance of nature is deeply engrained in many people, especially those focused on conservation goals, my assertion likely will seem provocative and dubious.

You will work in shifts of 8-10 hours per day and rotate into the dorm every 2 to 3 weeks. Everywhere the white man has touched it, it is sore. ~Anonymous Wintu Woman Our environmental problems originate in the hubris of imagining ourselves as the central nervous system or the brain of nature.

Globally, the rate of species loss may be as much as 1,000 times higher than at any time in the past 100,000 years. For example, enemies of a species can restrict its numbers, and those enemies include predators, disease organisms, and competitors—i.e., other species. Of the two, the sublime is the older and more pervasive cultural construct, being one of the most important expressions of that broad transatlantic movement we today label as romanticism; the frontier is more peculiarly American, though it too had its European antecedents and parallels.

There is a qualitative difference between the gap that separates the Excluded from the Included and the other three antagonisms, which designate three domains of what Hardt and Negri call "commons," the shared substance of our social being whose privatization is a violent act which should also be resisted with violent means, if necessary: the commons of culture, the immediately socialized forms of "cognitive" capital, primarily language, our means of communication and education (if Bill Gates were to be allowed monopoly, we would have reached the absurd situation in which a private individual would have literally owned the software texture our basic network of communication), but also the shared infrastructure of public transport, electricity, post, etc.; the commons of external nature threatened by pollution and exploitation (from oil to forests and natural habitat itself); the commons of internal nature (the biogenetic inheritance of humanity).
